Chernoff Hopeful Higher Taxi Fares Will Improve Reliability

February 22, 2012

The Mayor of Castlegar is hoping a recently-approved fare hike for local taxi service will increase reliability in his community.

The owner of Castlegar Taxi and Champion Cabs in Trail has been awarded a 35% overall fare increase.

But Lawrence Chernoff is anxious to see whether the increase in fees will translate into an increase in the number of cars on the road.

Trail Mayor Dieter Bogs meanwhile told us earlier this week he is still championing the idea of a subsidized, rural transportation strategy and will forward a resolution to the Association of Kootenay-Boundary Local Governments in April.

Chernoff believes the most important part of local taxi service is its on-demand nature for travel across town and in the case of emergencies.

The rate hike went into effect last Friday.
